Wolverines whip Allegheny

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's swimming and diving team opened the dual-meet portion of the 2009-10 schedule Saturday afternoon with a 135-101 victory over host Allegheny in non-conference action.

Five Grove City athletes earned victories Saturday, including two multiple-event winners. Senior diver Kyle Grubbs (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls) swept both diving events while freshman Alex Mathews (York, Pa./Spring Grove) won both distance events.

Grubbs won 1-meter diving with 249.37 points. He then won 3-meter diving with 237.45 points. Mathews won the 500 in 4 minutes, 56.71 seconds. He also took first in the 1000 with a time of 10:19.16.

Sophomore Kirk Gagliardo (Wadsworth, Ill./Warren Township) won the 50 free in 22.37 seconds while sophomore Josh Kim (Frederick, Md./New Life Christian) picked up a win in the 200 butterfly (2:04.56).

Junior Cam Coppelli (Guys Mills, Pa./Saegertown) won the 200 individual medley in 2:02.00.

Grove City sewed up the win by taking first in the 400 free relay as Gagliardo, Kim, junior Nate Nielsen (Houston, Texas/Lutheran South) and freshman Eric Fairchild (Corry, Pa./Corry) recorded a victorious time of 3:19.07.

Grove City will host Carnegie Mellon November 14 at 1 p.m.
