CMU clips Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's swimming and diving team opened the home portion of the 2009-10 schedule Saturday afternoon with a 176-124 setback against longtime rival Carnegie Mellon in a non-conference dual meet at the James E. Longnecker Pool.

Sophomore Kirk Gagliardo (Wadsworth, Ill./Warren Township) paced Grove City by sweeping the sprints. Gagliardo won the 50 free in 22.12 seconds, then won the 100 free in 48.05 seconds. He began his sweep by taking first in the 200 free with a victorious time of 1:46.46.

Gagliardo also anchored Grove City's victorious 200 medley relay squad. The quartet of junior Cam Coppelli (Guys Mills, Pa./Saegertown), senior Lincoln Larsen (Federal Way, Wash./Tacoma Baptist), sophomore Ben Bowser (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls) and Gagliardo opened the meet by winning the 200 medley relay in 1:37.29.

Coppelli also won the 100 backstroke in 53.91 while sophomore Clay Beckner (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) took first in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.36).

Senior Kyle Grubbs (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls) won 1-meter diving with 234.60 points.

Grove City (1-1) will visit Saint Vincent Friday night at 6 p.m. The Wolverines will then compete in the Kenyon Quad Saturday at noon.
