Wolverines top W&J

GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Grove City College men’s swimming and diving team improved to 7-1 overall and 1-0 in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Saturday afternoon with a 154-125 victory over Washington & Jefferson at the James E. Longnecker Competition Pool.

Sophomore Kirk Gagliardo (Wadsworth, Ill./Warren Township) picked up three individual victories to help lead the Wolveriens. Gagliardo won the 50 free in 21.98 seconds and took first in the 100 free with a time of 47.72. He completed the sweep of the sprints by winning the 200 free in 1:45.61.

Sophomore Ben Bowser (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls) also touched first in three events. He won the 200 butterfly in 2:01.23 and then won the 100 fly (53.32) on an exhibition basis. Bowser also touched first in the 200 individual  medley (2:00.38).

Junior Cam Coppelli (Guys Mills, Pa./Saegertown) swept the backstroke for Grove City. He won the 100 backstroke in 55.18 seconds and then took first in the 200 back (2:01.03).

Sophomore Josh Kim (Frederick, Md./New Life Christian) won the 500 in 4:57.54 while freshman Alex Mathews (York, Pa./Spring Grove) completed Grove City’s sweep of the freestyle events by winning the 1000 in 10:16.23.

Grove City also swept the breaststroke events. Senior Lincoln Larsen (Federal Way, Wash./Tacoma Baptist) won the 100 breaststroke in 1:00.66 while junior Bennett Keefer (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) captured the 200 breaststroke in 2:19.34.

Coppelli, Keefer, Bowser and junior Dan Gummel (Springfield, Ohio/Emmanuel Christian) opened the meet by winning the 200 medley relay in 1:38.79. Coppelli, Gummel, Gagliardo and freshman Eric Fairchild (Corry, Pa./Corry) won the 200 free relay in 1:27.98.

Senior diver Kyle Grubbs (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls) posted the high score on each board. He accumulated 279.40 points on the 3-meter board and a score of 261.00 on the 1-meter board.

During the meet, Grove City recognized its 12th class of inductees into the Swimming and Diving Hall of Fame. Norman “Chips” Koehler ’56, Augie Beyer ’83 and Matt Husak ’90 comprise this year’s class.

Grove City will visit Denison next Saturday, January 23 in non-conference action.
