Grove City wins at Clarion

CLARION, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's swimming and diving team opened the 2010-11 season Saturday by competing in the Clarion University Fall Classic. Wolverine swimmers won eight events and accumulated 160 total points in the event. Clarion took second with 120 team points.

Junior Josh Kim (Frederick, Md./New Life Christian) recorded three wins for Grove City while classmates Eric Fairchild (Corry, Pa./Corry) and Kirk Gagliardo (Wadsworth, Ill./Warren Township) each won twice.

Kim won the 200 butterfly in 2 minutes, 4.04 seconds and also notched wins in the 400 individual medley (4:33.57) and 500 free (5:07.10).

Fairchild took first in the 200 free (1:47.38) and then added a win in the 200 backstroke, recording a winning time of 2:08.40.

Gagliardo won the 50 free in 22.31, then posted a top time of 48.56 in the 100 free.

Fairchild, Gagliardo, senior Dan Gummel (Springfield, Ohio/Emmanuel Christian) and senior Nate Nielsen (Houston, Texas/Lutheran South) closed the meet by winning the 400 free relay in 3:17.10.

Grove City will open the dual-meet schedule next Saturday against visiting Allegheny. The meet starts at 1 p.m.
