Wolverines whip Allegheny
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's swimming and diving opened the dual meet portion of the 2010-11 schedule Saturday afternoon with a 180.5-103.5 victory over visiting Allegheny in non-conference action at the James Longnecker Competition Pool.
Five swimmers posted individual victories for the Wolverines (1-0), who also won both relay events. Junior Ben Bowser (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls) earned three wins for Grove City, including a sweep of the butterfly races. Bowser won the 100 fly in 52.47 seconds and took the 200 fly in 1:58.92. Bowser also posted a winning time of 1:59.09 in the 200 individual medley.
Junior Clay Beckner (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) and sophomore Alex Mathews (York, Pa./Spring Grove) each earned two wins. Beckner won the 100 breaststroke in 1:00.79 and prevailed in the 200 breaststroke with a 2:17.58 clocking. Mathews won the distance events, winning both the 500 (5:03.46) and 1650 (17:30.03).
Also for Grove City, sophomore Eric Fairchild (Corry, Pa./Corry) won the 200 free in 1:45.39 and junior Kirk Gagliardo (Wadsworth, Ill./Warren Township) captured first in the 50 free (21.67).
Beckner, Bowser, Fairchild and freshman Christian Dehli (Moneta, Va./Staunton River) opened the meet by winning the 400 medley relay in 3:35.81. Gagliardo anchored the victorious 200 free relay (1:27.62), which also featured junior Nick Hamilton (Crescent, Pa./Moon), freshman James Kintzing (Centreville, Va./Homeschooled) and senior Dan Gummel (Springfield, Ohio/Emmanuel Christian).
Grove City now leads the all-time series 31-30. The Wolverines return to action next Saturday, November 6, against visiting Saint Vincent in the Presidents' Athletic Conference opener.
