Grove City falls at CMU
PITTSBURGH -- The Grove City College men's swimming and diving team dropped a 167-127 decision to host Carnegie Mellon Saturday afternoon in a non-conference dual meet. The Wolverines are now 2-1 overall this season.
Grove City won both the meet-opening 200 medley relay and the meet-ending 200 free relay. Senior Cam Coppelli (Guys Mills, Pa./Saegertown), junior Clay Beckner (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg), junior Ben Bowser (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls) and junior Kirk Gagliardo (Wadsworth, Ill./Warren Township) opened the meet with a winning time of 1 minute, 35.54 seconds in the 200 medley relay.
Gagliardo, sophomore Eric Fairchild (Corry, Pa./Corry), senior Nate Nielsen (Houston, Texas/Lutheran South) and senior Dan Gummel (Springfield, Ohio/Emmanuel Christian) capped the meet by winning the 200 free relay in 1:26.15.
Gagliardo also posted a pair of individual victories. He won the 50 free in 21.15 seconds, then won the 100 free in 46.72.
Coppelli won the 100 back in 52.79 while Beckner took first in the 100 breaststroke (59.50). Sophomore Alex Mathews (York, Pa./Spring Grove) captured the 200 backstroke in 1:55.91.
Grove City returns to action next Saturday with a home tri-meet against Kenyon and Case Western at 1 p.m. in James E. Longnecker Competition Pool.
