Grove City wins Winter Invitational crown

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's swimming and diving team captured the team championship at the Wolverines' 14th annual Winter Invitational Saturday night in the James E. Longnecker Competition Pool. The Wolverines earned 1,164 points over the two-day event in winning the title. Misericordia finished second with 1,064.5 points.

Three freshmen earned individual victories for Grove City Saturday. Louis Gabrielle (Mahwah, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) won the 400 individual medley in 4 minutes, 17.38 seconds while E.J. Leuschner (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) took first in the 200 free (1:47.73). Freshman Dave Bossert (Colorado Springs, Colo./Pine Creek) won the 1650 with a time of 17:52.87.

Leuschner, Gabrielle, sophomore Ian Smyth (Troy, Pa./Troy) and sophomore Seth Brooks (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) earned second place in the 800 free relay (7:21.39). Gabrielle also took second in the 100 breaststroke (59.32) and 200 butterfly (1:58.87).

Freshman Noah Walker (Lexington, Ky./Homeschooled) earned third in the 400 IM (4:35.33) and the 200 breaststroke (2:23.00). Sophomore Peter Melnik (Clifton Park, N.Y./Homeschooled) placed third in 1-meter diving with 153.90 points.

Freshman Ken Vinyard (Baltimore, Md./Loyola Blakefield) finished fourth in the 1650 (18:27.73). Freshman C.P. Dehli (Moneta, Va./Staunton River) captured fourth in the 100 fly (56.48) while junior Collin Foster (Columbus, Ind./Columbus East) earned fourth in the 100 backstroke (55.87). Sophomore Drew Archibald (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) took fourth in the 200 breaststroke (2:23.34), one spot ahead of junior Matt Mahan (Butler, Pa./Knoch). Mahan took fifth in 2:25.76.

Freshman Mike Laine (Sanford, Maine/Sanford) finished fifth in the 1650 (18:32.35) while Brooks took fifth in the 200 free (1:53.67). Sophomore Jon Suchin (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) earned fifth in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:10.44. Leuschner secured fifth in the 100 free (50.04).

Dehli, freshman James Kintzing (Centreville, Va./Homeschooled), Suchin and senior Matt Armstrong (Loudonville, Ohio/Loudonville) took fifth in the 200 medley relay in 1:42.86. Kintzing, Smyth, Armstrong and Leuschner closed the meet by taking fifth in the 400 free relay (3:20.99).

Grove City will host Hiram next Saturday at 1 p.m.
