Grove City tops W&J

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's swimming and diving team improved to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Saturday with a 154.5-116.5 victory over host Washington & Jefferson in PAC action at the Henry Memorial Center.

Four Grove City performers earned multiple individual wins for the Wolverines. Junior Kirk Gagliardo (Wadsworth, Ill./Warren Township) won the 50 free in 21.57 seconds, then posted a winning time of 47.57 in capturing the 100 free.

Senior Cam Coppelli (Guys Mills, Pa./Saegertown) swept the backstroke races for Grove City. He won the 100 back in 55.65 then won the 200 back in 2:03.16. Junior Ben Bowser (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls) took first in the 100 butterfly (53.24) and the 200 fly (2:01.55).  Junior Clay Beckner (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) prevailed in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.91) and also touched first in the 200 individual medley (2:03.25).

Senior Nate Nielsen (Houston, Texas/Lutheran South) won the 200 free in 1:50.31 while sophomore Adam Walker (Lexington, Ky./Homeschooled) took the 200 breaststroke (2:22.07).

Coppelli, freshman James Kintzing (Centreville, Va./Homeschooled), senior Dan Gummel (Springfield, Ohio/Emmanuel Christian) and Gagliardo opened the meet by winning the 200 medley relay in 1:39.51.

Gagliardo, senior Matt Armstrong (Loudonville, Ohio/Loudonville), freshman E.J. Leuschner (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) and senior Jared Bailey (Portsmouth, R.I./Aquidneck Island Christian) capped the meet by touching first in the 400 free relay (3:21.66).

Grove City will host Denison next Saturday at 1 p.m.
