Wolverines close conference schedule with win

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's swimming and diving team closed the Presidents' Athletic Conference dual meet schedule Saturday by notching a 104-91 win over visiting Bethany at the James E. Longnecker Competition Pool. The Wolverines finish the conference schedule with a 4-0 mark.

Six different Grove City swimmers earned individual victories Saturday. Senior Jared Bailey (Portsmouth, R.I./Aquidneck Island Christian) won the 1650 in 17 minutes, 54.50 seconds while sophomore Seth Brooks (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) won the 200 free in 1:54.57.

Sophomore Ian Smyth (Troy, Pa./Troy) prevailed in the 100 backstroke (1:00.69) and sophomore Drew Archibald (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) took the 100 breaststroke in 1:04.11

Freshman Noah Walker (Lexington, Ky./Homeschooled) posted a winning time of 2:10.47 in the 200 butterfly and senior Matt Armstrong (Loudonville, Ohio/Loudonville) won the 50 free in 22.67.

Archibal, Armstrong, senior Andrew Parry (Hellertown, Pa./Saucon Valley) and senior Dan Wells (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) opened Saturday's meet by winning the 400 medley relay in 3:51.79.

Several Grove City swimmers also posted top times on an exhibition basis in their respective races. Armstrong went 50.49 in the 100 free to touch first while Smyth (2:06.69) did likewise in the 200 backstroke. Walker touched first in the 100 butterfly (56.10) and Bailey had the fast time in the 400 individual medley (4:37.44). Freshman E.J. Leuschner (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) touched first in the 500 (5:12.20).

Archibald, Brooks, Wells and freshman Ken Vinyard (Baltimore, Md./Loyola Blakefield) closed the meet with a 1:32.61 exhibition effort in the 200 free relay.

Grove City will host the PAC Championships February 17-19 as part of the James E. Longnecker Invitational.
