Wolverines thump W&J

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's swimming and diving team opened the new calendar year Saturday afternoon with a 154-129 victory over visiting Washington & Jefferson in a Presidents' Athletic Conference dual meet at the James E. Longnecker Pool.

Senior Nick Hamilton (Cresecent, Pa./Moon) helped pace Grove City by winning the 200 and 500 freestyle. Hamilton won the 200 free in 1 minute, 47.38 seconds and then prevailed in the 500 with a time of 5:00.39.

Senior Kirk Gagliardo (Wadsworth, Ill./Warren Township) won the 50 free in 21.31 seconds and then touched first in the 100 butterfly (52.04). Senior Matt Mahan (Butler, Pa./Knoch) won the 100 breaststroke in 1:03.54 while senior Josh Kim (Frederick, Md./New Life Christian) won the 200 butterfly in 2:01.34.

Sophomore C.P. Dehli (Moneta, Va./Staunton River) took first in the 100 free (49.49) and senior Ben Bowser (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls) too the 200 back in 2:02.09.

Freshman Grant Wilt (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte) won the 200 breaststroke in 2:22.13 and sophomore Louis Gabriele (Mahwah, N.J./Don Bosco) touched first in the 200 individual medley (2:05.59).

Dehli, Bowser, senior Clay Beckner (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) and junior Eric Fairchild (Corry, Pa./Corry) opened the meet by winning the 200 medley relay in 1:37.14. Hamilton, Gagliardo, senior Collin Foster (Columbus, Ind./Columbus East) and junior Ian Smyth (Troy, Pa./Troy) capped the meet by posting the top time in the 400 free relay (3:16.93).

Grove City (4-4, 2-0 PAC) will visit Denison next Saturday in a non-conference dual meet.
