Wolverines storm past Westminster

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's swimming and diving team remained undefeated in Presidents' Athletic Conference action Thursday night by rolling to a 178-115 win at conference foe Westminster in Memorial Field House. Grove City is now 3-0 in conference dual meets this year.

The Wolverines captured 13 of the 16 events held Thursday night with five competitors earning multiple victories. Senior Ben Bowser (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls) helped pace the Wolverines by earning three wins. He won the 100 butterfly in 52.62 seconds, captured the 200 butterfly in 1:57.62 and recorded a victorious time of 1:58.92 in the 200 individual medley.

Senior Clay Beckner (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) swept the breaststroke, winning the 100 in 1:00.65 and taking the 200 breast in a time of 2:14.89. Classmate Kirk Gagliardo (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) won the 100 free (47.72) and the 200 free (1:44.80).

Junior Eric Fairchild (Corry, Pa./Corry) took the 50 free in 21.83 seconds and then won the 500 free in 4:57.20. Freshman diver Richie Klimek (Oakdale, Pa./South Fayette) earned wins on both boards. He won 1-meter diving with 224.85 points and then won 3-meter diving with a score of 244.50.

Sophomore Dave Bossert (Colorado Springs, Colo./Pine Creek) won the 1000 in 10:19.95. Gagliardo, sophomore C.P. Dehli (Moneta, Va./Staunton River), junior Ian Smyth (Troy, Pa./Troy) and senior Nick Hamilton (Crescent, Pa./Moon) closed the meet by winning the 400 free relay in 3:14.86.

Grove City has won four straight against Westminster and now leads the all-time series 41-38.

The Wolverines will visit Bethany Saturday at 1 p.m. in conference action. Several Wolverine swimmers will compete at the University of Pittsburgh Quad Saturday at 11 a.m.
