Grove City extends lead to 70
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's swimming and diving team continues to set the pace at the College's 22nd annual James E. Longnecker Invitational/Presidents' Athletic Conference Championships after the second night of action in the three-day event. The Wolverines have accumulated 542 team points through Friday night's action and hold a 70-point lead on Westminster.
The Wolverines opened Friday night's action by winning the 200 medley relay. The foursome of senior Collin Foster (Columbus, Ind./Columbus East), senior Clay Beckner (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg), senior Ben Bowser (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls) and senior Kirk Gagliardo (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) recorded a victorious time of 1 minute, 32.97 seconds.
Bowser and Gagliardo also picked up individual wins for the Wolverines. Bowser won the 400 individual medley in a school-record time of 4:02.83 while Gagliardo won the 200 free in 1:41.39.
Beckner took second in the 100 breaststroke (57.83) and senior Josh Kim (Frederick, Md./New Life Christian) placed second in the 400 IM (4:15.83). Junior Adam Walker (Lexington, Ky./Homeschooled) finished third in the 400 IM (4:17.40).
Also for Grove City, junior Eric Fairchild (Corry, Pa./Corry) took third in the 200 free (1:43.12), one spot ahead of senior Nick Hamilton (Crescent, Pa./Moon), who recorded a fourth-place time of 1:43.34.
Sophomore Louis Gabriele (Mahwah, N.J./Don Bosco) placed fourth in the 100 breaststroke (58.72). Classmate C.P. Dehli (Moneta, Va./Staunton River) earned fourth in the 100 butterfly (52.49) and fifth in the 100 backstroke (53.15). Freshman Jim Bossert (Colorado Springs, Colo./Pine Creek) captured fifth in the 200 free with a time of 1:45.94.
The Wolverines are in pursuit of their fifth straight conference title. Saturday's preliminaries begin at 10 a.m. and the finals start at 5:30 p.m.
