Grove City Wins GCC Invitational, PAC Title

Sophomore Steve Johnston (North Wales, PA/North Penn) posted three gold medal swims, including one NCAA qualifying effort, to lead the Wolverines to their ninth consecutive Grove City College Invitational championship and fourth straight Presidents' Athletic Conference title.

Johnston earned GCC Invitational and PAC MVP honors after winning the high-point race (48) with first-place finishes in the 200 individual medley (1:59.26), 100 backstroke (:53.16) and 200 back (1:57.37).  His 100 time beat the NCAA Division III provisional qualifying standard (:53.59), which could win him a spot in the NCAA championship meet March 18-20 at the University of Minnesota.

The Wolverines, led by second-year head coach Keith Bullion, accumulated 501 points, placing ahead of Washington & Jefferson (416), Penn State Altoona (338), Bethany (222.5), Misericordia (174.5) and Frostburg State (174).

Senior Todd Baumgartner (Grafton, OH/St. Edward) also claimed multiple individual titles, winning the 500 freestyle (4:52.11) and 1650 free (17:13.38). 

Senior Bob VanderWeele (Corry, PA/Corry) contributed a championship swim in the 100 free (:48.73) and senior Jeff Harris (Gibsonia, PA/Hampton) took gold in the 200 breaststroke (2:15.69).

Grove City added wins in the 200, 400 and 800 freestyle relays.
