Wolverines Secure Fourth at GCC Winter Invite


December 5, 1998--Sophomore Steve Johnston (North Wales, PA/North Penn) captured first place in three events and senior Bob VanderWeele (Corry, PA/Corry) won a pair as the Wolverines took fourth place at the six-team Grove City College Winter Invitational.

Johnston touched first in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:58.89, the 100 backstroke in :54.01 and the 200 back with a 1:59.45.  All three times set new invitational records.

VanderWeele posted gold-medal swims in the 100 and 200 freestyle with respective times of :49.00 and 1:49.16.  The 100 time broke the invitational standard.

Senior Todd Baumgartner (Gafter, OH/St. Edward) collected a first-place finish in the 1650 free with a time of 17:33.14.

VanderWeele, Baumgartner, Johnston, and junior Trent Wilson (Cranberry, PA/Seneca Valley) teamed up to place second in the 800 freestyle relay in 7:27.00.  VanderWeele and Johnston joined freshman Chris Treter (Cranberry, PA/Seneca Valley) and senior Brian Toy (Melbourne, FL/Palm Bay) for a silver-medal finish in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:17.28.

SUNY Geneseo won the meet with 632.5 points, followed by Buffalo State (421), West Virginia Wesleyan (382), Grove City (359), Penn State Altoona (196.5) and Washington & Jefferson (177).
