Wolverines Close Southern Swing


SAVANNAH, GA, January 10, 2000--The Wolverine swimming and diving team concluded a nine-day training trip in the Deep South with a second-place finish at the three-school Fairmont State Invitational held at the Chatham County Aquatic Center in Savannah, Georgia on Monday.

Fairmont won the meet with 102 points, followed by Grove City with 65 and Genesee Community College with 8.  

Steve Johnston (North Wales, PA/North Penn) won first place in the 200-yard individual medley (2:05.18), and Luke Downer (Daytona Beach, FL/Warner Christian) touched first in the 500 freestyle (5:12.01).

Last Thursday, Grove City won the combined men's-women's Buffalo State Invitational at Orlando, Florida with a first-place total of 214 points.  Buffalo State placed second with 158 points.  Johnston claimed first in the 50 free (:23.07) and 100 back (:59.43), while Downer took the 500 free (5:14.84) and 200 individual medley (2:11.74).  Other gold-medal swims turned in by GCC included David Peters (North East, PA/North East) in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.40), Scott Jones (Naples, FL/Barron Collier) in the 100 butterfly (:59.96) and Chris Treter (Cranberry Twp., PA/Seneca Valley) in the 100 free (:52.67).  Also, Johnston and  Peters joined Bruce Unks (Glenshaw, PA/Shaler) and Bob Young (Glenshaw, PA/Shaler) to capture first in the 200 medley relay (1:50.98).
