Wolverines Capture Second at GCC Winter Invite

GROVE CITY, PA, December 4, 1999--The Wolverine swimming and diving team placed second, ahead of two NCAA Division II programs and its top conference rival, at the six-school Grove City College Swimming and Diving Winter Invitational, December 3-4, at the College Pool.

Grove City trailed only SUNY-Geneseo in the final standings as the meet's defending champion finished with 518 points.  Grove City closed with 424 points, followed by Buffalo State (417), PAC foe Washington & Jefferson (369) and Division II schools Gannon (307) and West Virginia Wesleyan (188).

Luke Downer (Daytona Beach, FL/Warner Christian) highlighted the two-day event for GCC with a trio of gold-medal finishes.  Downer set a new invitational record in the 1650-yard freestyle (17:23.41) and added wins in the 500 freestyle (5:00.17) and 200 free (1:49.16).

Steve Johnston (North Wales, PA/North Penn) swam away with three silver medals, placing second in the 100 free (:48.48), 200 individual medley (2:02.74) and 100 backstroke (:54.32).  Trent Wilson (Cranberry Twp., PA/Seneca Valley) won silver in both the 500 free (5:00.94), which completed a 1-2 finish with Downer, and the 400 IM (4:29.15) and touched fifth in the 200 back (2:06.15). 

Bob Young (Glenshaw, PA/Shaler) was the bronze medalist in the 50 free (:22:45) and 100 back (:55.73) and added a fourth-place finish in the 200 back (2:01.70).   David Peters (North East, PA/North East) placed fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.06) and fifth in 200 breast (2:21.58) and 500 free (5:06.22).  Scott Jones (Naples, FL/Barron Collier) turned in a fifth-place time in the 400 IM (4:37.79), while Chris Treter (Cranberry Twp., PA/Seneca Valley) cracked the top six in the 100 free (:50.09).

The Wolverines placed second in three relays events with Johnston, Treter, Downer and Young in the 400 free relay (3:18.19), Johnston, Peters, Bruce Unks (Glenshaw, PA/Shaler) and Young in the 400 medley relay (3:46.65) and Johnston, Wilson, Treter and Downer in the 800 free relay (7:21.62).
