Wolverines win 15th straight PAC title

ERIE, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's tennis team captured its 15th consecutive Presidents' Athletic Conference championship Saturday afternoon at the Pennbriar Fitness and Racquet Club. Grove City crowned five individual PAC champions along with a pair of doubles titles.

The Wolverines accumulated 47 team points, outdistancing second-place Waynesburg (31).

Junior Brent Moon (Lima, Ohio/Shawnee) earned the PAC's Player of the Year award after winning titles at both first singles and first doubles. Moon downed Waynesburg's Matt Otis in the first singles finals, 6-4, 6-1, then teamed with sophomore Brock Thompson (Hudson, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) for the first doubles title.

Moon and Thompson downed Waynesburg's Otis and Bryan McAnulty in the first doubles final, 8-3. Thompson captured the second singles crown with a 7-6, 6-1 triumph over Washington and Jefferson's Ali Nemazee.

Freshman Chris Baker (Bethlehem, Pa./Erie McDowell) won the title at third singles, downing top-seeded Mark Gates of Waynesburg, 6-0, 6-4. Senior Phil Springirth (Erie, Pa./Harborcreek) won the fourth singles crown with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Thiel's Geno Bianco. Baker and Springirth combined to win the PAC's title at second doubles, topping Nemazee and Doug Johnston of Washington and Jefferson, 8-2.

At fifth singles, junior Sam Fortna (Annville, Pa./Annville-Cleona) topped Johnston in the championship round, 6-3 and 6-3. Sixth singles entry Sam Dickmann (Sarasota, Fla./Hope Presbyterian) took fourth at sixth singles while the third doubles combination of Fortna and Matt Hearn (Montrose, Pa./Montrose) placed third.
