Grove City 9, Penn State Behrend 0

March 18, 1999--The eight-time defending Presidents' Athletic Conference champion Wolverine tennis team opened the 1999 season with a 9-0 shutout over Penn State Behrend at the indoor Pennbrier Racquet Club in Erie, PA.

Grove City won four of the six singles matches in straight sets led by Dan Barber (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) at number one (6-2, 6-0).  In three sets, John Aderholt (Wheeling, WV/Wheeling Park) won at two (6-3, 5-7, 6-3) and Brian Allan (Bridgeville, PA/South Fayette) took three (4-6, 6-1, 6-0).  R.C. Phinney (Geneva, OH/Geneva), Keith Petrie (Frederick, MD/Thomas Johnson) and Nicholas Zapf (Pittsburgh, PA/Thomas Jefferson) prevailed in straight sets at four (6-2, 6-4), five (6-3, 6-2) and six (6-3, 6-0), respectively.

In doubles, Barber and Aderholt prevailed at one (8-6), Allan and Phinney claimed two (8-2) and Petrie and Zapf won at three (8-3).

"We played well enough to win today," said 27-year head coach Joe Walters.   "It will take a few more matches to sharpen our timing, but overall I'm pleased with our first effort."
