Grove City won four of the six singles matches in straight sets led by Dan Barber (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) at number one (6-2, 6-0). In three sets, John Aderholt (Wheeling, WV/Wheeling Park) won at two (6-3, 5-7, 6-3) and Brian Allan (Bridgeville, PA/South Fayette) took three (4-6, 6-1, 6-0). R.C. Phinney (Geneva, OH/Geneva), Keith Petrie (Frederick, MD/Thomas Johnson) and Nicholas Zapf (Pittsburgh, PA/Thomas Jefferson) prevailed in straight sets at four (6-2, 6-4), five (6-3, 6-2) and six (6-3, 6-0), respectively.
In doubles, Barber and Aderholt prevailed at one (8-6), Allan and Phinney claimed two
(8-2) and Petrie and Zapf won at three (8-3).
"We played well enough to win today," said 27-year head coach Joe Walters.
"It will take a few more matches to sharpen our timing, but overall I'm
pleased with our first effort."
