Wolverines win conference title

ERIE, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's tennis team won titles in seven of nine flights at the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championships Saturday to secure the team title at the Pennbriar Club. Grove City accumulated 50 team points in winning the program's 20th consecutive conference title.

Grove City won the conference title in five of the six singles draws. At second singles, senior Peter Davis (Indianapolis, Ind./Heritage Christian) did not drop a game in two tournament matches en route to the league crown.

Davis earned a 6-0, 6-0 win over Thomas More's Evan Bryan in Friday's semifinals. Davis then blanked Waynesburg's Jeff Canning in the finals Saturday.

Freshman Anthony Rosselli (Poland, Ohio/Poland) captured his first career PAC title as he prevailed at third singles. He won the title with a 6-1, 6-3 final-round decision over Waynesburg's Emile Khoury. Rosselli advanced to the finals by picking up a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Bethany's Levi Naylor in the semifinals.

At fourth singles, senior Bill Derocha (Port Huron, Mich./Port Huron Northern) closed the tournament with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Bethany's Jay Lyonett. Friday, Derocha downed Waynesburg entry Adam Woodruff in the semifinals, 6-0 and 6-0.

Senior Shaun Mills (Pittsgrove, N.J./A.P. Schalick) downed Westminster's Derek Fredrickson in the finals at fifth singles, 6-0, 6-2, to win the conference title. Mills reached the championship match by virtue of a 6-0, 6-2 win over Bethany's Ryan Rokisky.

Like Davis, sophomore Scott Yanak (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) did not lose a game on his way to the conference title at No. 6 singles. Yanak downed W&J's Cameron Sell in the semifinals, 6-0, 6-0. In the finals, Yanak rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Waynesburg's Jon Anderson.

Junior Ricky Garrett (Rocky River, Ohio/Rocky River) earned runner-up at first singles. Garrett topped Bethany's Dustin Opalka in Friday's semifinals, 6-3, 6-4. In the finals, Garrett dropped a 6-0, 6-3 verdict to W&J's Christopher Faulk.

Davis and Garrett won the conference title at first doubles with an 8-3 win over Faulk and Brice Manin in the championship match. The Davis-Garrett tandem advanced to the finals with an 8-3 win over Thomas More's Andrew Hetzer and Evan Bryan.

At third doubles, Rosselli and freshman Caleb Fuller (Columbus, Ind./Homeschooled) won the league title with an 8-6 victory over the Waynesburg duo of Anderson and Jason Logan. The Rosselli-Fuller combo opened the tournament by securing an 8-0 win over Bethany's Rokisky and Evan Oslund in the semifinals.

Derocha and Mills placed second at second doubles after dropping an 8-4 decision to Lyonett and Opalka. The Derocha-Mills team blanked Westminster's Scott Lawrence and Sean Black in the semifinals, 8-0.

Head coach Joe Walters earned PAC Coach of the Year honors for the fifth consecutive season. Faulk earned PAC Player of the Year recognition. Waynesburg finished second with 28 team points. W&J finished third with 19 points.

Grove City will wrap up the 2010 season Tuesday with a non-conference match at Walsh University at 4 p.m.
