Grove City holds off W&J
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's tennis team held off a valiant effort from Washington and Jefferson to earn a hard-fought 8-1 road victory over the Presidents in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at the Janet L. Swanson Tennis Courts.
Grove City (7-3, 6-0 PAC) swept the doubles to jump out to a well-needed 3-0 lead, as the Wolverines would find themselves in tough battles in four of the six singles flights.
Junior Peter Riley (Woodbury, Pa./Northern Bradford) rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 victory at first singles and sophomore Dan Schafhauser (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) didn't drop a game in defeating reigning PAC Player of the Week Renato Popovic at sixth singles. W&J (6-7, 3-2 PAC), however, would make things interesting in the remaining four matchups, earning the win at fifth singles.
Sophomore Jon Graber (Atglen, Pa./Octorara) won the tiebreaker in the first set for a 7-6 victory before taking the second set 7-5 to win at third singles while both juniors Colby Beighey (Fombell, Pa./Riverside) and Chris Collins (West Chester, Pa./Delaware Co. Christian) had to rebound from second set losses to win at second and fourth singles, respectively.
The Wolverines will step away from their conference schedule to host Mercyhurst on Saturday at 11 a.m.
