Grove City hands W&J first PAC loss
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's tennis team took sole possession of first place in the Presidents' Athletic Conference standings in resounding fashion, handing Washington and Jefferson its first loss of the season in conference play with a 9-0 sweep on Friday afternoon at the Walters-Zbell Tennis Courts.
Grove City (5-6 overall, 5-0 PAC) won all three doubles matches before winning each of the six singles matches in straight sets.
Seniors Peter Riley (Woodbury, Pa./Northern Bedford) and Colby Beighey (Fombell, Pa./Riverside) jumped out to a 5-0 lead en route to a 8-2 victory at first doubles while senior Chris Collins (West Chester, Pa./Delaware County Christian) and junior Jon Graber (Atglen, Pa./Octorara) pulled away for an 8-4 victory in a match that was tight early at second doubles.
At third doubles, junior Dan Schafhauser (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) and freshman Zack Sprunger (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) jumped out to a 3-0 lead but had to hold off a late surge by W&J (8-9, 5-1) to win 8-5.
In singles competition, Riley, Beighey and Schafhauser won easily at first through third singles. Graber rolled in his first set at fourth singles before pulling out a hard-fought 7-5 second-set victory over Chad Dille while freshman Matt Lynch (Eighty Four, Pa./Bentworth) cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win at fifth singles. Freshman Jon Fleet (West Chester, Pa./Hendersen) capped the sweep for Grove City by earning a 6-4, 6-1 victory at sixth singles over Greg Smith, the reigning PAC Player of the Week.
Grove City continues with its PAC schedule tomorrow, hosting Waynesburg at 9:45 a.m. at the Walters-Zbell Tennis Courts.
