Wolverines topped by Wilkes in NCAA Opening Round
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The Grove City College men's tennis team closed the 2014-15 season Thursday afternoon by dropping a 5-0 decision to Wilkes in the opening round of the 2015 NCAA Division III Championship Tournament, hosted by the University of Mary Washington.
Wilkes (20-2), who qualified for the NCAA Tournament by winning the Freedom Conference for the eighth-straight year, swept the doubles competition and won matches at second and sixth singles to seal the victory.
Grove City (7-7), who won its 25th-consecutive Presidents' Athletic Conference Tournament title on April 25 to qualify for NCAAs for the fifth year in a row, pushed the Colonels in each of the three doubles matches. Junior Dan Schafhauser (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) and freshman Zack Sprunger (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) rallied from an early 4-1 deficit to close within 7-5 before Wilkes took the final game to win 8-5 at third doubles. Senior Chris Collins (West Chester, Pa./Delaware Co. Christian) and junior Jon Graber (Atglen, Pa./Octorara) also dropped an 8-5 decision at second doubles. Seniors Peter Riley (Woodbury, Pa./Northern Bedford) and Colby Beighey (Fombell, Pa./Riverside) battled with Wilkes' top duo of brothers Dominic and Jacob Parfianowicz in a back-and-forth match before narrowly dropping a 9-7 decision.
In singles competition, Beighey fell to Steven Wilson 6-2, 6-2 at second singles while freshman Jon Fleet (West Chester, Pa./Hendersen) dropped his sixth singles match 6-0, 6-4 to end the match.
Riley and freshman Matt Lynch (Eighty Four, Pa./Bentworth) each won their first sets in unfinished matches at first and fifth singles, respectively.
