Grove City wins title at CUP

CALIFORNIA, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's track and field team captured the team title in the Division III section of California (Pa.) University's Western Pennsylvania Championships Saturday afternoon. Grove City accumulated 189 team points in out-distancing Washington & Jefferson (149 points) and Juniata (138).

Three Grove City athletes recorded wins Saturday in distance events. Senior Dan Spaulding (Rochester, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) set a new Grove City record in the 10,000-meter run by posting a time of 32 minutes, 9.61 seconds. Meanwhile, junior Derek Kruse (Middlefield, Ohio/Cardinal) won the 1500 in 4:06.40.

Junior Frankie Hourigan (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) picked up Grove City's third win by taking first in the steeplechase. Hourigan covered the 3,000 meters in 10:00.37.

Kruse also took second in the high jump by clearing 6 feet, 1 1/2 inch.

Sophomore John Fite (Sunnyvale, Calif./Ad Fontes) placed fourth in 400 dash in 51.19 seconds. He also joined senior Chris Allebach (Souderton, Pa./Souderton), freshman Nick Philpot (Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown) and junior Tim Palma (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-Dewitt) on the Wolverines' fourth-place 1600 relay team. That quartet recorded a time of 3:28.95.

Junior Matt Ridge (Latrobe, Pa./Latrobe) took fourth in the shot put with a mark of 47-2 1/4 while senior Matt Six (Akron, Ohio/Manchester) placed fourth in the discus with a toss of 139-11. Six also took fifth in the shot put (45-8 1/2), one spot ahead of senior Chris Huber (Ontario, Ohio/Ontario). Huber marked at 44-7 1/2.

Junior Tony Clark (Stow, Ohio/Stow) placed fifth in the discus with a throw of 135-2. Philpot added a seventh-place finish in the 400 (52.13) while Huber took seventh in the discus (129-9).

Grove City will compete in the Marietta Invitational next Saturday, April 4.
