Grove City places 5th

MARIETTA, Ohio -- The Grove City College men's track and field team earned fifth place at the 15-team Marietta College Don Frail Invitational Saturday afternoon at Don Drumm Stadium. The Wolverines scored 67 points during the meet to take fifth. NCAA Division II member Tiffin won the team title with 113 points.

Grove City athletes placed 1-2 in the javelin to help lead the Wolverine effort Saturday. Freshman Zach Gross (Butler, Pa./Knoch) won the javelin with a throw of 163 feet, 9 inches while classmate George Matthews V (Allison Park, Pa./Deer Lakes) placed second with a toss of 154-2.

Senior Chris Allebach (Souderton, Pa./Souderton) led Grove City's effort on the track by taking second in the 400 hurdles with a time of 56.97 seconds.

Senior Tim Su (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) took third in the 5000 in 16:31.81 while junior Frankie Hourigan (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) placed third in the 3000 steeplechase (19:52.39).

Senior Matt Six (Akron, Ohio/Manchester) took fourth in the discus (132-2) and seventh in the shot put (44-6 3/4). Senior Chris Huber (Ontario, Ohio/Ontario) finished sixth in the shot put (44-10 1/4) and eighth in the discus (126-0) while freshman pole vaulter Scott Harman (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Borough) cleared 12-6 3/4 to earn sixth.

Junior Derek Kruse (Middlefield, Ohio/Cardinal) took seventh in the 800 (2:00.43), one spot ahead of senior Darin Miller (Line Lexington, Pa./Christopher Dock). Miller finished eighth in 2:01.12.

Sophomore John Fite (Sunnyvale, Calif./Ad Fontes) finished eighth in the 400 (52.12) while junior Jeff Tharnish (Elma, N.Y./Iroquois) finished eighth in the pole vault by clearing 11-1.

Grove City will compete in the Slippery Rock Open Saturday, April 11.
