Wolverines open season at CUP
CALIFORNIA, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's track and field squad opened the 2010 season by competing in California University of Pennsylvania's Early Bird Invitational at Adamson Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Senior thrower Matt Six (Akron, Ohio/Manchester) earned a pair of victories Saturday to help lead the Wolverine effort. Six won the shot put with a heave of 45 feet, 4 1/4 inches. He then won the discus with a toss of 139-4.
Senior thrower Matt Ridge (Latrobe, Pa./Latrobe) placed second in the shot put (44-10 1/4) and third in the discus (126-6). Freshman Andrew Munro (Mountville, Pa./Hempfield) took second in the javelin with a toss of 162-5, one spot ahead of junior Pete Polesnak (Hermitage, Pa./Kennedy Catholic), who had a best throw of 159-11.
On the track, Grove City's 400-meter relay team of junior Luke Johnston (Pembarville, Ohio/Eastwood), junior John Fite (Sunnyvale, Calif./Ad Fontes), sophomore Lester Bragg (East Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) and senior Tim Palma (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-Dewitt) captured second place with a time of 45.26 seconds.
Freshman Josiah Husk (Bloomington, Ill./University) placed third in the 800 with a time of 2:02.64 while classmate Francis Ridge (Derby, N.Y./Lake Shore) earned third in the 10,000 with a time of 36:10.72.
Sophomore Scott Harman (Freehold, N.J./Freehold) cleared 12 feet in the pole vault to place third while freshman Patrick Miller (Berlin, Ohio/Berlin Hiland) marked at 39-7 3/4 in the triple jump, earning third place.
Three Grove City athletes recorded fourth-place finishes. Freshman Sam Shesman (North East, Pa./North East) took fourth in the 800 (2:03.00) while senior Frankie Hourigan (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) earned fourth in the 1500 (4:23.03). Sophomore Tyler Gheres (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane) placed fourth in the 10,000 with a time of 36:22.59.
Grove City will host its annual Mini-Meet Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Robert E. Thorn Field.
