Grove City opens season

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's track and field team opened the 2011 season by hosting an unscored invitational at Robert E. Thorn Field Tuesday afternoon. Six Wolverine athletes earned individual victories on the day.

Freshman Arleigh McRae (East Brookfield, Mass./Whitinsville Christian) paced the Wolverines by winning both the 800 and 1500. He won the 800 in 2 minutes, 3.84 seconds and then captured the 1500 in 4:15.94.

Senior Garrett Cichowitz (Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer) won the 5000 in 15:48.24 while sophomore Josiah Tobin (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) took the 3000 steeplechase in 10:09.97.

Freshman John Green (Ligonier, Pa./Homeschooled) won the 400 hurdles in 59.94 seconds.

Two field performers also notched wins for Grove City. Sophomore Patrik Miller (Berlin, Ohio/Berlin Hiland) won the triple jump with a mark of 38 feet, 5 inches. Freshman Phil Venanzi (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) won the discus with a throw of 111-3.

Grove City will compete in Wheeling Jesuit's Bill Van Horne Invitational Saturday.
