Grove City competes at SRU Invite

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's track and field team competed in Slippery Rock University's unscored Invitational Saturday at N. Kerr Thompson Stadium.

Freshman Alec Schultz (Wayzata, Minn./Orono) paced the Grove City effort Saturday by winning the 5,000-meter run in 16 minutes, 10.22 seconds.

Grove City's 1,600-meter relay squad of junior Nick Philpot (Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown), sophomore Patrik Miller (Berlin, Ohio/Berlin Hiland), senior John Fite (Clifton, Va./Ad Fontes) and freshman John Green (Ligonier, Pa./Homeschooled) closed the meet by taking second in a season-best time of 3:25.30.

Two Grove City distance runners recorded runner-up finishes. Senior Garrett Cichowitz (Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer) finished second in the 10,000 with a time of 32:19.13. Sophomore Josiah Tobin (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) finished second in the 3,000 steeplechase (10:05.82).

Sophomore Tim Coyle (Langhorne, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep) finished fifth in the 5,000 (16:57.51) and freshman Mark Talbot (Tallmadge, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) took fifth in the 10,000 (34:27.39).

In the field, junior David Ferreira (Titusville, Pa./Titusville) helped lead Grove City by finishing fourth in the triple jump. Ferreira posted a best mark of 40 feet. Miller took fifth in both the long (19-0) and triple (39-4) jumps. Sophomore Andrew Munro (Mountville, Pa./Hempfield) finished fifth in the javelin with a throw of 155-11. Munro finished as the top collegiate performer in the event as he placed behind four unattached competitors.

Grove City will compete in the Presidents' Athletic Conference North Quad Wednesday at Westminster College.
