Grove City 2nd at Westminster

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's track and field team captured second place at the 11-team Westminster College Invitational Saturday at rain-soaked Memorial Field. The Wolverines finished as the top Presidents' Athletic Conference squad at the meet by accumulating 110 team points. Penn State Behrend won the team title with 171.5 points. Westminster finished third at 107.5.

Grove City closed the meet by capturing first place in the 1,600 meter relay as the quartet of junior Nick Philpot (Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown), sophomore Patrik Miller (Berlin, Ohio/Berlin Hiland), senior John Fite (Clifton, Va./Ad Fontes) and freshman John Green (Ligonier, Pa./Homeschooled) posted a victorious time of 3 minutes, 24.44 seconds.

The Wolverines also opened the meet on top as freshman Mark Talbot (Tallmadge, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) won the 10,000-meter run in 36:02.08.

Three Grove City athletes posted runner-up finishes. Sophomore Francis Ridge (Derby, N.Y./Derby) took second in the 10,000 (36:07.38) while freshman Arleigh McRae (East Brookfield, Mass./Whitinsville Christian) earned second in the 1,500 with a time of 4:08.94. McRae finished as the top Division III entrant in that event. Sophomore Josiah Tobin (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) finished second in the steeplechase with a 10:10.39 clocking.

Junior David Ferreira (Titusville, Pa./Titusville) led Grove City's field athletes by taking third in the long jump with a best mark of 18 feet, 6 inches. Green took third in the 400 hurdles (58.81).

Fite also finished fourth in the 400 (52.03). Freshman Alec Schultz (Wayzata, Minn./Orono) placed fourth in the steeplechase (10:18.45) and junior Tyler Gheres (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane) earned fourth in the 10,000 (36:56.73).

The Wolverines will return to action April 29-30 for the 2011 Presidents' Athletic Conference Championships in Bethany, W.Va.
