Wolverines crown several champions at conference meet

BETHANY, W.Va. -- The Grove City College men's track and field team earned fifth place at the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championships Saturday at Bethany College's Bison Stadium. The Grove City thinclads accumulated 76 team points during the two-day event. Westminster won the team title with 126 points, followed by Washington & Jefferson (119) and Bethany (95). Waynesburg finished fourth with 86 points.

Grove City bookended Saturday's session with victories. Sophomore Josiah Tobin (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) opened Saturday's action by winning the 3000 steeplechase in a season-best time of 9 minutes, 48.26 seconds.

The Wolverines closed the meet in victorious fashion as the 1600-meter relay team of junior Nick Philpot (Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown), sophomore Patrik Miller (Berlin, Ohio/Hiland), senior John Fite (Clifton, Va./Ad Fontes) and freshman John Green (Ligonier, Pa./Ligonier Valley) won with a season-best time of 3:22.09.

Freshman Phil Venanzi (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) led Grove City in the field events by winning the shot put with a best heave of 44 feet, 2 3/4 inches.

Senior Garrett Cichowitz (Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer) earned second place in the 10,000 with a school-record time of 31:50.52. He also finished third in the 5000 (15:17.55).

Green earned third in the 400 hurdles (56.93) while Fite finished fourth in the 400 (51.08). Freshman Alec Schultz (Wayzata, Minn./Orono) took fourth in the steeplechase (10:12.96) and freshman Arleigh McRae (East Brookfield, Mass./Whitinsville Christian) placed fourth in the 1500 (4:06.48). Schultz also placed fifth in the 5000 (15:15.19), one spot ahead of McRae (15:53.31).

Philpot captured fifth in the 400 (51.10) and Miller took fifth in the 400 hurdles (57.14). Grove City also earned fifth in the 400-meter relay as Green, freshman Mun Hwan Cho (Seoul, Korea/Houghton Academy), senior Luke Johnston (Pembarville, Ohio/Eastwood) and junior Stephen Rigos (Saylorsburg, Pa./Faith Christian) combined for a time of 44.17 seconds.

Sophomore Andrew Munro (Mountville, Pa./Hempfield) led Grove City in the jumps by finishing fifth in the high jump (5-8).

Also for the Wolverines, sophomore Nate Townsend (Tucker, Ga./Killian Hill Christian) took sixth in the 800 (2:02.41) and freshman Alex Kauffman (Kenai, Alaska/Soldotna) placed sixth in the 110 high hurdles (18.15). Junior Ben Lutz (Sykesville, Md./Marriotts Ridge) finished sixth in the steeplechase with a time of 10:23.55.
