Grove City opens 2012 season

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's track and field team opened the 2012 season Tuesday afternoon by hosting an unscored five-team invitational at Robert E. Thorn Field.

Freshman Ethan Witmer (North Lima, Ohio/South Range) paced the Wolverines by sweeping the hurdle events Tuesday. Witmer won the 110 high hurdles in 16.79 seconds and then won the 400 hurdles in 58.18 seconds.

Sophomore Alec Schultz (Wayzata, Minn./Orono) took second in the 3000-meter run with a time of 9:11.36 while sophomore John Green (Ligonier, Pa./Ligonier Valley) earned runner-up in the 400 hurdles (58.81).

Junior Josiah Douglas (Sayre, Pa./Sayre) placed second in the high hurdles (18.41) and senior Ben Lutz (Sykesville, Md./Marriotts Ridge) earned second in the 3000 steeplechase (10:48.19).

Sophomore Khalil Ervin (Malvern, Pa./Phoenixville) cleared 5 feet, 8 inches to take second in the high jump. Senior David Ferriera (Titusville, Pa./Titusville) and junior Patrik Miller (Berlin, Ohio/Hiland) tied for second in the long jump as both men marked at 20-4 1/2.

Ervin, Green, sophomore Mun Hwan Cho (Seoul, Korea/Houghton Academy) and sophomore Andrew Ledbetter (Fairfax, Va./Oakton) took second in the 400-meter relay with a time of 44.72 seconds.

Schultz, freshman Peter Christiansen (Frederick, Md./Homeschooled), sophomore Arleigh McRae (East Brookfield, Mass./Whitinsville Christian) and junior Sam Shesman (North East, Pa./North East) finished second in the 3200-meter relay (8:09.64).

Grove City will compete in Wheeling Jesuit's Bill Van Horne Invitational Saturday.
