Wolverines take 4th

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's track and field team earned fourth place at the nine-team Presidents' Athletic Conference Championships Friday and Saturday at Washington & Jefferson College's Cameron Stadium. The Wolverines recorded 89.5 team points during the two-day event. Westminster won the meet with 122.5 points, followed by Waynesburg (111). W&J took third with 98 while Thomas More finished fifth at 82.5.

Wolverine athletes recorded three runner-up finishes in the meet. Junior John Green (Ligonier, Pa./Ligonier Valley) earned runner-up in both the 400 meters and 400 hurdles. He posted a time of 49.12 seconds in the open 400 and a 57.64 clocking in the 400 hurdles.

Freshman Brandon Ward (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) took second in the 110 hurdles with a time of 16.26 seconds.

Junior Arleigh McRae (East Brookfield, Mass./Whitinsville Christian) earned third in both the 1500 (4:11.59) and 5000 (15:38.90) while sophomore Ethan Witmer (North Lima, Ohio/South Range) placed third in the 400 hurdles (58.45).

Senior Andrew Munro (Mountville, Pa./Hempfield) led Grove City's field effort by taking fourth in the javelin with a best throw of 173 feet, 10 inches. Junior Matt Mucha (Parma, Ohio/Cuyahoga Falls) took fourth in the 3000 steeplechase with a time of 10:07.66.

Freshman Dane Mossgrove (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) earned fifth in both hurdle events. He took fifth in the high hurdles with a time of 16.67 seconds and fifth in the 400 hurdles in 1:00.12. Junior Mark Talbott (Tallmadge, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) placed fifth in the 10,000 (33:18.01) Friday night while junior Matt Logie (West Chester, Pa./Delaware County Christian) earned fifth in the 800 (1:59.73).

Senior Louis Phillips (Beaver Falls, Pa./Beaver Falls) cleared 11-5 3/4 in the pole vault to take fifth place.

Talbott also took sixth in the steeplechase (10:08.85) while junior Alec Schultz (Wayzata, Minn./Orono) earned sixth in the 5000 (16:15.62). Ward earned sixth in the 400 hurdles (1:00.22). Senior Cooper Thurston (Washington, Mo./Washington) earned seventh in the 800 (2:00.89) and freshman Brendan Tassone (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) took eighth in the 1500 (4:22.62). Witmer captured eighth in the 110 hurdles (17.18).

Geneva (67.5), Bethany (67), Saint Vincent (63) and Thiel (39) rounded out the team standings.

Several Grove City performers have qualified for the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships in Springfield, Mass., May 16-17.

Green, Witmer, freshman Jake Purvis (Colorado Springs, Colo./Classical Academy) and junior Mun Hwan Cho (Seoul, Korea/Houghton Academy) took fifth in the 1600 relay with a time of 3:29.14.
