Wolverines open season at YSU Icebreaker

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio. -- The Grove City College men's track and field team kicked off its second indoor season with a number of new program records at the Youngstown State University Icebreaker on Friday evening at YSU's W.A.T.T.S.

Junior hurdler Nick Betz (Colorado Springs, Colo./Discovery Canyon) contributed to three of the Wolverines' six total school records set on the night. Betz finished third individually with a program-record time of 8.21 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles. As of publication, that is the second-fastest time in NCAA Division III so far this year.

Betz set a new indoor record in the 200 with a 12th-place time of 22.77 seconds. He then contributed to Grove City's record-setting showing in the 4x400m relay, teaming with junior Ryan Buchalter (Colorado Springs, Colo./Colorado Springs Christian), sophomore Quaide Simek (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) and senior Brandon Ward (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) for a third-place time of 3:26.53.

Buchalter established a new program mark in the 400 with a ninth-place time of 50.50 seconds while junior jumper Mike Cole (Leesburg, Va./Flint Hill) recorded a new standard in the long jump with a best mark of 19 feet, 8.25 inches (6.00m).

Sophomore Nate Longjohn (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) set the final record of the day for the Wolverines, clearing 12 feet, 9.5 inches (3.90m) in the pole vault to tie for 12th place.

Cole tied for 10th in the high jump by clearing 5-7 (1.70m) while Ward added a 13th-place finish in the 60 hurdles in 9.07 seconds.

Yesterday was the Wolverines' lone meet of the 2015 calendar year. Grove City will return to action on February 6, 2016 at Mount Union's Jim Wuske Invitational.
