Betz, Buchalter lead Grove City at Oberlin
OBERLIN, Ohio. -- Juniors Nick Betz (Colorado Springs, Colo./Discovery Canyon) and Ryan Buchalter (Colorado Springs, Colo./Colorado Springs Christian) each helped the Grove City College men's indoor track and field team to multiple victories as the Wolverines opened the 2016 calendar year at the Oberlin Crimson and Gold Invitational at Heisman Field House on Friday evening.
Betz earned individual wins in the 60 hurdles (8.53) and the 200 (23.85) while Buchalter claimed victory in the 400 (52.15) and finished third in the 200 (23.95). The two Colorado natives teamed with sophomore Quaide Simek (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) and senior Brandon Ward (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) for a winning time of 3:36.75 in the 4x400 relay and paired with junior Jacob Zeltman (Kidron, Ohio/Dalton) and senior Jonah Meyer (Cambridge Springs, Pa./Cambridge Springs) for a second-place showing in the 4x200 relay (1:38.38).
Senior Joshua Dunsworth (Erie, Pa./Classical Academy) was victorious in the 800 with a time of 2:04.36 while junior Mike Cole (Leesburg, Va./Flint Hill) took second in the triple jump with a best leap of 39 feet, one inch (11.91m).
Simek was third in the 400 in 53.91 seconds while senior Dane Mossgrove (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) took third in the 60 hurdles (9.04). Freshman Ryan Budnik (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) led the Wolverine distance runners with a pair of third-place finishes in the mile (4:44.33) and the 3000 (9:36.86) in his Grove City debut.
Sophomore Connor Lowe (Perry, Ohio/Perry) edged fellow sophomore Quinton Reed (Oil City, Pa./Oil City) for fourth place in the shot put by 0.25 inches, as the two posted marks of 40 feet, 7 inches and 40 feet, 6.75 inches, respectively. Junior Andrew Mascio (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) finished fourth in the 3000 in 9:47.39 while Betz added a fifth place finish in the 60 in 7.44 seconds.
Grove City returns to action next Friday at the Baldwin Wallace Mid-February Meet. Competition is slated to begin at 4 p.m.
