Grove City opens outdoor season at Cal Early Bird
CALIFORNIA, Pa. -- Led by a pair of runner-up finishes from sophomore Nick Betz (Colorado Springs, Colo./Discovery Canyon) and freshman Graham Allen (Upper Dublin, Pa./Chestnut Hill Academy), the Grove City College men's track and field team opened the 2015 outdoor season with a strong showing at the California University (Pa.) Early Bird Invitational on Saturday.
Betz posted a second place finish in the 110 hurdles with a time of 15.01 seconds, which was tops among all DIII runners and qualified Betz for the ECAC DIII Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Allen took second in the 800 in 1:56.73 in his first outdoor race as a Wolverine.
Betz and Allen teamed with freshman Evan Carroscia (Streetsboro, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) and junior Brandon Ward (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) for a third-place showing in the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:29.45, which was also best among D-III teams in competiton.
Sophomore Daniel Christiansen (Frederick, Md./Frederick) finished fourth in the 5000 (15:49.94) to lead Grove City's distance runners while classmate Brandon Wise (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) took sixth in the 10000 (34:48.12). Junior Tom Kocur (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) led Grove City's jumpers by tying for sixth in the high jump (1.75m) while senior Thomas Whittaker (Grove City, Pa./Grove City), junior Slater Simek (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional), junior Jonah Meyer (Cambridge Springs, Pa./Cambridge Springs) and Carroscia placed sixth in the 4x100 relay (45.90).
Carroscia was seventh individually to lead all DIII runners in the 400 hurdles (57.26) while freshman Quinton Reed (Oil City, Pa./Oil City) led Grove City's throwers with a seventh-place finish in the javelin (47.96m). Sophomore Gabe Imhof (Strasburg, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) added an eighth-place showing in the 1500 (4:17.43).
Grove City returns to action next weekend when they host Geneva and Chatham in a tri-meet on Saturday at 10 a.m.
