Betz, Christiansen lead Wolverines at SRU Open

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Sophomores Nick Betz (Colorado Springs, Colo./Discovery Canyon) and Daniel Christiansen (Frederick, Md./Frederick) each earned individual victories as the Grove City College men's track and field team posted a strong showing among a difficult field at the Slippery Rock University Open on Thursday afternoon and evening at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

Betz earned the win in the 110 hurdles with a season-best time of 14.95 seconds, besting his ECAC-qualifying mark of 15.10 from the Cal (Pa.) Early Bird Invitational. Christiansen closed Grove City's evening by claiming the crown in the 5000, holding off Point Park's Eric Torres with a victorious time of 15:52.49.

Grove City's 4x100 relay of senior Thomas Whittaker (Grove City, Pa./Grove City), junior Slater Simek (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional), Jonah Meyer (Cambridge Springs, Pa./Cambridge Springs) and freshman Evan Carroscia (Streetsboro, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) also was victorious with a time of 45.65 seconds.

Freshman Graham Allen (Upper Dublin, Pa./Chestnut Hill Academy) took second in the 800 with a season-best time of 1:56.63 while also leading the Wolverines with a fourth-place finish in the 1500 in 4:11.27. Carroscia added a fourth-place showing in the 110 hurdles (16.28), and fellow freshman Nick McClure (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) and sophomore Andrew Mascio (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) finished fourth (10:30.42) and fifth (10:35.63), respectively, in the steeplechase. Whittaker led Grove City in the 400 with a sixth-place time of 52.54.

Junior Tom Kocur (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) led Grove City's jumping corps with a third-place finish in the high jump (1.75m) while freshman Nate Longjohn (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) took sixth in the long jump (5.70m) and sophomore Nate Henry (Mays Landing, N.J./ACIT) was sixth in the triple jump (12.36m). Henry also was seventh in the long jump (5.69m) while freshman Andy Williamson (Ocean, N.J./Ocean) finished seventh in the triple jump (12.02m).

Freshman Quinton Reed (Oil City, Pa./Oil City) took fourth in the javelin with a best mark of 47.03 meters to lead the Wolverine throwers while sophomore David Spinder (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) finished fifth in the discus (36.15m). Senior Jason Glacken (South Fork, Pa./Forest Hills) added a pair of seventh-place finishes in the shot put (12.65m) and the discus (35.84m) while senior Hayden Faust (Kempton, Pa./Kutztown) was seventh in the javelin (42.05m).

Grove City returns to action on Saturday, April 11, when they compete at the Westminster Invitational.
