Grove City repeats as conference kingpin

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's track and field team captured its second consecutive Presidents' Athletic Conference championship Saturday by edging runner-up Waynesburg for the title at Robert E. Thorn Field. Grove City finished the two-day event with 121 team points while Waynesburg finished with 120.

Two Grove City athletes earned victories while several others recorded top performance throughout the 19 events. Friday night, sophomore Daniel Christiansen (Frederick, Md./Frederick) won the 10,000 meters with a winning time of 32 minutes, 46.82 seconds. Saturday, sophomore Nick Betz (Colorado Springs, Colo./Discovery Canyon) won the 110 hurdles in 14.85 seconds.

Freshman Graham Allen (Upper Dublin, Pa./Chestnut Hill) placed second in the 800 meters in 1:57.72 while classmate Evan Carroscia (Streetsboro, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) took second in the 400 hurdles (55.23).

Allen also took third in the 1500 (4:02.62) while Christiansen finished third in the 5000 with a time of 15:56.90. Freshman Quinton Reed (Oil City, Pa./Oil City) led Grove City's efforts in the field events by finishing third in the javelin with a best throw of 181 feet, 1 inch. Reed's performance clinched the team title for Grove City.

Betz added a fourth-place finish in the 400 hurdles (56.08) while junior Dane Mossgrove (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) placed fourth in the 110 hurdles (16.30). Freshman Drew Thibault (Durham, N.H./Oyster River) placed fourth in the steeplechase in 10:18.27. Allen, sophomore Ryan Buchalter (Colorado Springs, Colo./Colorado Springs Christian), Carroscia and senior Thomas Whittaker (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) finished fourth in the 1600-meter relay with a time of 3:24.25.

Freshman Nate Longjohn (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) captured fourth in the pole vault by clearing 12-5 1/2. He finished one spot ahead of freshman Chase Stout (Lewisberry, Pa./Red Land), who finished fifth by clearing 11-11 3/4. Longjohn also earned fifth in the long jump (20-9 1/2).

Senior Jason Glacken (South Fork, Pa./Forest Hills) earned fifth in the shot put with a heave of 44-10 1/4. Junior Josh Dunsworth (Erie, Pa./Collegiate Academy) finished fifth in the 800 (2:00.07). Whittaker, Carroscia, junior Slater Simek (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) and junior Jonah Meyer (Cambridge Springs, Pa./Cambridge Springs) combined for a fifth-place finish in the 400 relay (44.66).

Head coach Todd Gibson earned the conference's Coach of the Year award.

Last year, Grove City recorded a 3.4-point margin of victory over Westminster in the conference championships. Grove City has now won 19 all-time Presidents' Athletic Conference crowns.

Grove City closes the 2015 season next Friday by hosting its annual Family Weekend Invitational at Thorn Field.
