Wolverines win two out of three

ERIE, PA, September 15, 2001--In its first action since Labor Day Weekend, the Grove City College men's water polo team won two of three games at the Penn State Behrend College Invitational Saturday in Erie.  The Wolverines posted wins over Behrend, 20-9, and Mercyhust College, 11-5, around a 19-6 loss to Washington & Jefferson College.  Grove City's record improved to 2-5 overall.

Four Wolverines scored three or more goals in the victory over Behrend as Grove City came within a goal of the school's single-game record (21).  Sophomore Darin Vermillion (Renton, WA) led the way with four goals, while junior John Douglass (Salt Lake City, UT/Skyline), sophomore Justin Huff (Waterloo, IL/St. John Vianney) and sophomore Drew Martin (Monroeville, PA/Gateway) netted three each.   Sophomore Matt Gibson (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) contributed two goals, four assists and three steals.  Junior Markus Hermannsdoerfer (Albany, NY/Guilderland) chipped in with two goals and four steals.  Sophomore Dave Bonsignore (Mahwah, NJ/Mahwah) scored twice and senior Andy Fleck (Bedford, OH/Bedford) had one goal.  Sophomore goalkeeper Ryan McCracken (Dallastown, PA/Dallastown) was credited with 13 saves on 20 shots, while Fleck stopped three of five shots.

Gibson added three goals in the loss to arch-rival Washington & Jefferson.  Hermannsdoerfer, Fleck and Martin tallied a goal each.  McCracken turned back 12 of 27 shots and Fleck saved nine of 13 shots.

In the nightcap against first-year program Mercyhurst, Gibson, Martin and Huff scored two goals apiece.  Martin added three steals and Huff had two assists.   Bonsignore, Douglass, Vermillion, Fleck and Hermannsdoerfer had a goal each.   McCracken saved 11 of the 13 shots he faced, Fleck stopped six of seven and McCracken five of seven, including a four-meter penalty shot -- the first save of its kind in school history.
