Wolverines win 16th straight PAC title

WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's cross country earned its 16th straight Presidents' Athletic Conference championship Saturday morning at the PAC Cross Country Championships, hosted by Waynesburg College at the Greene County Airport. Grove City accumulated 19 team points to earn the team title. Waynesburg took second with 58 points.

Sophomore Daniel Spaulding (Rochester, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) earned PAC MVP honors after a third-place overall finish in the race. Saint Vincent's Adam Smith and Nate Sylvester placed first and second, respectively, but the Bearcats are not currently eligible for PAC titles or postseason awards.

Spaulding covered the course in 27 minutes, 49 seconds to take third and also earn First Team All-PAC honors.

Sophomore Brett Kelly (Abingdon, Md./Bel Air) finished fifth with a time of 28:26. Freshman Royce Hyland (Boise, Idaho/Boise) followed in sixth with a time of 28:29 while sophomore Nathan Johnson (Eugene, Ore./Sheldon) crossed in 16th place (29:09). Junior Joey Cortez (Ellwood City, Pa./Ellwood City Lincoln) finished 17th in 29:14.

Kelly, Hyland, Johnson and Cortez all joined Spaulding on the seven-man PAC First Team.

Three Grove City runners earned PAC Second Team recognition. Freshman Frankie Hourigan (Frederick, Md./Urbana) took 18th place in 29:15 while freshman Joshua Lauer (Kobe, Japan/Homeschooled) placed 21st (29:34). Freshman Jonathan Srour (York, Pa./Christian School of York) took 25th in 29:48.

Grove City will return to Waynesburg in two weeks for the NCAA Mideast Regional.
