Grove City earns 9th at Mideast Championships

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's cross country team concluded the 2007 season Saturday afternoon by placing ninth in the 43-team NCAA Mideast Regional Championships, hosted by Muhlenberg College. Grove City accumulated 351 team points to earn ninth place, which is Grove City's best finish at the regional championships since the 1999 team took ninth out of 30 teams.

Haverford edged Allegheny, 45-52, for the team title. Carnegie Mellon took third with 71 points while Dickinson (108) took fourth.

Freshman Garrett Cichowitz (Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer) led Grove City with a 30th-place finish. Cichowitz earned 30th after completing the eight-kilometer course in 25 minutes, 42 seconds. By placing 30th, Cichowitz earns All-Mideast Region honors, which is awarded to the top 35 finishers in the regional championships.

Senior captain Joey Cortez (Ellwood City, Pa./Ellwood City Lincoln) earned 73rd place for Grove City after posting a time of 26:44. Cortez finished two spots ahead of junior Brett Kelly (Abingdon, Md./Bel Air), who completed the course in 26:46. Junior Daniel Spaulding (Spencerport, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) placed 85th in 26:59 while sophomore Frankie Hourigan (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) finished 88th with a time of 27:02.

Freshman Gordon Grob (Hudson, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) placed 93rd (27:07) while junior Tim Su (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) took 99th in 27:14. Grove City is just one of six teams to place all seven runners in the top 100. A total of 282 runners competed.

Carnegie Mellon junior Brian Harvey won the individual title in a time of 24:44, nipping Allegheny senior Ryan Place by two seconds.
