Grove City competes at Penn State

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's cross country team placed eighth out of nine teams at the Penn State Spiked Shoe Invitational Friday evening. The Wolverines finished with 197 points while competing against several Division I institutions, including Michigan and Penn State. Michigan won the team title with 25 team points.

Four Grove City runners placed in the top 50 in the 143-runner field, led by a 20th-place finish from junior Garrett Cichowitz (Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer). He completed the 5.2-mile course in 27 minutes, 24 seconds.

Senior Derek Kruse (Middlefield, Ohio/Cardinal) earned 35th with a time of 28:15 while classmate Frankie Hourigan (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) placed 43rd in 28:37. Freshman Josiah Husk (Bloomington, Ill./University) finished 45th in 28:40.

Also for Grove City, junior Gordon Grob (Hudson, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) made his 2009 debut by finishing 54th in 29:21. Fellow junior Cordell Oberholtzer (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) finished 60th in 29:49 and sophomore Tyler Gheres (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane) followed in 61st with a time of 29:56.

Geneseo State's Lee Berube won the individual title with a time of 26:22.

Grove City will compete in the Saint Vincent Invitational September 26 in Latrobe, Pa.
