Grove City takes 5th

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's cross country team opened the 2011 season Saturday morning by taking fifth place at Westminster College's 14-team Fisher Invitational. Grove City accumulated 113 team points in a tightly-bunched field.

Division II Gannon won the team title with 95 points, one point ahead of D-II Mercyhurst. Franciscan finished third at 99 points and Geneva took fourth at 104.

Sophomore Mark Talbott (Tallmadge, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) paced Grove City with a 14th-place finish. He completed the eight-kilometer course in 28 minutes, 49.7 seconds. Talbott finished one spot ahead of classmate Alec Schultz (Wayzata, Minn./Orono), who finished 15th in 28:55.3.

Sophomore Paulson Domasky (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) earned 25th in 30:07.5 while sophomore Matt Mucha (Parma, Ohio/Cuyahoga Falls) placed 29th (30:25.7). Freshman Joey Clark (Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer) rounded out the Wolverines' top five by taking 30th in 30:26.4.

Franciscan's Bill Jones earned medalist honors with a victorious time of 27:00.2.

Grove City will compete in the Waynesburg Invitational next Saturday.
