23: Locker throws five-hit shutout at PAC-foe Waynesburg
Fifth-year senior Erick Locker already had been in the midst of his
strongest season as a Wolverine and one of the best seasons by a Grove
City pitcher in recent years when Wolverine Baseball traveled to
Waynesburg for a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader on the
afternoon of April 26.
That afternoon, however, Locker was at his very best, allowing just five
hits to the Jackets and striking out a pair to earn his second career
shutout and lead Grove City to a 3-0 victory in the second game of the
doubleheader.
Behind a Matt Waugaman RBI-single and a Matt Corner two-run single in
the top of the first, the Wolverines jumped out to a 3-0 lead, which
would be all the offense Locker would need. After allowing a leadoff
base hit, Locker would retire the following batter and then get a double
play from his defense to get out of the first.
After retiring the Jackets in order in the second, the Wolverine defense
turned another double play in the third to erase a leadoff walk and
allow Locker to face just the minimum through three innings.
That streak would end in the bottom of the fourth, but Waynesburg failed
to manage more than one hit in each of the final four innings as Locker
kept a zero on the home half of the scoreboard.
