25: Women's Golf finishes 19th in first NCAA Championships appearance
With a victory at the 2014 Presidents' Athletic
Conference Championships, the Grove City College women's golf team
secured their first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division III
Championships.
Not was it only the first appearance for the Wolverines, but, in fact,
it was also the first time any PAC women's golf program had made an
appearance at the championships while affiliated with the conference.
Coach Melissa Lamie and the five participants- Esther Durling, Kayla
Finney, Jordan Greenwall, Meghan Love and Victoria VanBuskirk- set out
on the weekend of May 10 for Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla., where they would
play four rounds of golf on the El Campeón Golf Course at the Mission
Inn Resort and Club.
After a rough first round that saw them sitting in 21st place, the
Wolverines improved as a team by 30 total strokes in Round Two to move
into 20th. Continuing to find their groove despite numerous weather
delays, Grove City shot nine strokes better still in Round Three to
advance into 19th place, where they were seeded entering the tournament.
Unfortunately, Grove City's week would end there, as tournament
officials were forced to make a cut to 12 teams prior to the final round
due to the delays earlier in the week.
Durling would finish tied for 66th after three rounds to lead the
Wolverines. Her third-round score of 80 was tied for 17th-best in that
round.
