Lady Wolverines split opener

HIRAM, OH, March 23, 2000--The Lady Wolverine softball team opened the 2000 season with seven runs in the first two innings and held on to defeat host Hiram, 7-2, in the first of two on Thursday.  Hiram rallied to take the nightcap, 6-0.

Rachel Russell (Shelbina, MO/South Shelby) cracked a three-run double in the first inning and was one of four Lady Wolverines with two hits in the victory.  Ellie Smith (Grove City, PA/Grove City) went 2-for-3 three with two runs scored and three stolen bases.  Laura LeVake (Faribault, MN/Faribault) had two hits, including a double, and scored a run.  Kim Hanson (Olympia, WA/Timberline) also recorded two of the Lady Wolverines' 10 hits.  Nicole Hable (Shoreview, MN/Totino-Grace) and Lisa Colletti (Richboro, PA/Council Rock) each added singles.

LeVake (1-0) notched the complete-game victory, allowing six hits and two earned runs, while striking out six and walking three.

Megan Wittenwyler (Des Moines, IA/Dowling) went 2-for-3 three in the second game with a double.  Hable also had a two-base hit, while Smith, Colletti and Russell contributed singles. 

Jamie Batchelor (Lebanon, PA/Ann-Cleona) gave up just six hits in her first collegiate outing, striking out one and walking three. Three of the six runs allowed by the lefty were unearned. 

Grove City, 1-1 overall, hosts Geneva Friday at 3:30 p.m.   Hiram moved to 2-14 overall.
