GCC softball team earns split at Hiram

First Game Box   Second Game Box

HIRAM, OH, March 29, 2001--On an afternoon when almost every key stat added up to eight, the Lady Wolverine softball team (2-4) split its doubleheader at Hiram College (5-11)Thursday afternoon, losing the first game, 6-0, but rallying to win the nightcap, 8-0, in five innings.

In the first game, the Lady Wolverines banged out nine hits but left eight runners stranded in scoring position.  Hiram used two runs in the second, fifth and sixth innings to win its home opener.  Junior Laura LeVake (Faribault, MN/Faribault) and freshman Allison Atwood (Warren, PA/Warren) collected two hits each, while junior Stephanie Murphy (Munroe Falls, OH/Stow-Munroe Falls) and sophomore Jayne Mincey (Grove City, PA/Grove City) each cracked doubles to the wall in left center.  LeVake went the distance in her third start of the season, allowing three earned runs on nine hits, while striking out three and walking two.

Grove City went to work early in Game Two, scoring three runs on four hits.  It proved to be all the run support that second-game hurler Atwood needed as the crafty rookie blanked the Lady Terriers on six hits.   Atwood struck out one and didn't walk a batter.  Eight of the nine Lady Wolverine starters recorded at least one hit and eight GCC batters drew a walk, leading to the eight-run victory.  Atwood helped her cause with two of the Lady Wolverines' 11 hits in the game, making her 4-for-6 in the twin bill.  Senior Megan Wittenwyler (Des Moines, IA/Dowling) and freshman Sheila Mattes (Concord, NC/First Assembly) each contributed two hits and drove in a pair of runs.  Sophomore Ellie Smith (Grove City, PA/Grove City) and freshman Kassie Hayes (Grove City, PA/Grove City) each had a hit, an RBI and scored twice.  Murphy, sophomore Rachel Russell (Shelbina, MO/South Shelby) and freshman Jennifer Neumann (Brookfield, OH/Kennedy Christian) joined the hit parade with a single apiece, while freshman Sarah Babb (Cranberry, PA/Cranberry) reached base twice on walks.
