GCC takes Westminster to wire, drops two

First Game Box   Second Game Box

GROVE CITY, PA, April 18, 2001--Grove City College sophomore CF Ellie Smith (Grove City, PA/Grove City) hit an inside-the-park home run and freshman RHP Molly Forney (Annville, PA/Annville-Cleona) mowed down 19 of the 25 batters she faced, but visiting Westminster College completed a doubleheader sweep over the Lady Wolverines, extending its winning streak to 15 games Wednesday.

Grove City, now 4-8 overall, dropped the first game, 4-0, and lost the nightcap, 2-1.  Westminster improved to 26-6 overall.

The Lady Wolverines managed just two hits in Game One as Lady Titan starter Bethany Pinkerton struck out 14 and walked just two in seven complete innings of work.  Westminster plated a run in the first, third, fifth and sixth innings.  Junior RHP Laura LeVake (Faribault, MN/Faribault) fanned four and walked none over seven innings, allowing eight hits and four runs (three earned).

Grove City opened the scoring in Game Two when fleet-footed Smith circled the bases with two outs in the third after lining the ball to the gap in right-center.  The home run marked the team's first of the season and the left-handed hitter's first as a Lady Wolverine.

The lead remained 1-0 until the fifth when Westminster evened the score with a one-out double followed by a run-scoring single.  After a scoreless sixth, the Lady Titans led off the seventh with a triple and scored the game-winner with a one-out single.

The loss dimmed an otherwise stellar outing by Forney, who allowed just one hit through the first four frames.  Forney yielded six total hits, while striking out five and walking none.

Senior RF Megan Wittenwyler (Des Moines, IA/Dowling) collected two of the Lady Wolverines' six hits in the twin bill.

Temperatures hovered in the upper 20s with wind gusts that made it feel like five below.

Grove City plays a pair at defending Presidents' Athletic Conference champion Bethany Thursday at 3:00 p.m.
