Grove City falls out of PAC softball tourney

Waynesburg Game Box

BETHANY, WV, April 28, 2001--Another late rally came up just short as the Lady Wolverines (7-14) bowed out of the double-elimination Presidents' Athletic Conference Softball Championship Tournament with a 4-3 loss to Waynesburg on Saturday.

Trailing 4-2 in the bottom of the seventh, Grove City opened the inning with singles by freshman C Kassie Hayes (Grove City, PA/Grove City) and sophomore CF Ellie Smith (Grove City, PA/Grove City).  Senior Kristina Dixon (Smethport, PA/Smethport), who pinch ran for Hayes, advanced to third on the single by Smith.   Smith, representing the tying run, stole second.  Freshman 2B Allison Atwood (Warren, PA/Warren) then laced a single to right, scoring Dixon, but Waynesburg RF Jessica Cancel threw out a sliding Smith at home.  After a ground out to short, freshman P Molly Forney (Annville, PA/Annville-Cleona) walked, placing runners at first and second with two outs for senior LF Jessie Renaldo (Brookville, PA/Brookville).   Renaldo, who belted a run-scoring double to the wall in left center an inning earlier, sent a shot up the middle that was gloved by Lady Yellow Jacket SS Marisa Jenkins, who touched second with the final out.

The Lady Wolverines jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when junior SS Stephanie Murphy (Munroe Falls, OH/Stow-Munroe Falls) doubled home Smith.  Waynesburg came back with a run in the second and two in the fifth before Grove City added its single runs in the sixth and seventh.

Forney went the distance for GCC, allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits, while striking out seven and walking just one.

Smith collected two of the team's eight hits in the game.
