Allegheny takes two from GCC

MEADVILLE, PA, March 13, 2002--The Grove City College women's softball team was swept by host Allegheny College on Wednesday in its first action since returning from a five-day trip to Wilmington, North Carolina.

The Lady Wolverines (1-3) saw a 3-0 lead slip away in the first game as Allegheny (2-0) rallied with a run in the third, two in the fifth and one in the sixth to post a 4-3 victory in its season opener.  Grove City grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when freshman SS Rachel Romance (East Springfield, PA/Northwestern) and junior 3B Elena Cecchini (Avella, PA/Avella) cracked back-to-back doubles to lead off the inning.  The Lady Wolverines added a pair of unearned runs in the third as freshman C Carissa Threewitt (Cupertino, CA/The King's Academy) and junior CF Ellie Smith (Grove City, PA/Grove City) came around to score on an errant throw to third.

Senior P Laura LeVake (Faribault, MN/Faribault), voted this week's Presidents' Athletic Conference player of the week after tossing a no-hitter in her season debut on Mar. 1, surrendered five hits over six innings, striking out four and walking one.
