Late rally falls short against Wooster

GROVE CITY, PA, April 3, 2002--A three-run rally in the seventh inning wasn't enough for the Lady Wolverine softball team, which left 15 runners on base in a 5-3 loss to visiting Wooster on a bone-chilling afternoon at the College Field Wednesday.

Grove City (1-6) put a runner on base in each inning, including the lead-off batter five times, and left the bases loaded in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings.  The Lady Wolverines stranded 11 in scoring position in the game.  Wooster (7-8) scored three runs in the third and added two in the seventh, while stranding just four.

Trailing 5-0 in the bottom of the seventh, freshman SS Rachel Romance (East Springfield, PA/Northwestern) led off with a double to center.  After a ground out, Romance scored on senior P Laura LeVake's (Faribault, MN/Faribault) single up the middle.  Three straight walks pushed home another Lady Wolverine run to make it 5-2, then, after a fly out, sophomore 2B Allison Atwood (Warren, PA/Warren) delivered a two-out, bases-loaded single to left to cut the deficit to two.  With the bags still juiced, freshman RF Stephanie Briggs (Grove City, PA/Grove City), who doubled earlier in the game, lifted a two-strike pitch deep to left field where Wooster's Kerri Horst made a running catch for the final out.

The game, which ended with an air temperature of 28 degrees, lasted 2 hours and 15 minutes.  The second game was canceled due to cold.

LeVake went the distance for Grove City, scattering five hits and striking out three.

Atwood, LeVake and sophomore Sarah Babb (Cranberry, PA/Cranberry) each accounted for two of Grove City's eight hits.
