Lady Wolverines open PAC slate at W&J

WASHINGTON, PA, April 11, 2002--The Grove City College women's softball team dropped both ends of its first conference doubleheader on Thursday, surrendering six unearned runs to host Washington & Jefferson College, who won by finals of 7-2 and 5-2 at Washington Park.

In the first game, the top third of the Lady Wolverine batting order went a combined 7-for-12 at the plate, but Washington & Jefferson jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three innings and held on to win by a five-run margin.  Sophomore P Allison Atwood (Warren, PA/Warren) collected three hits in four at-bats, while junior CF Ellie Smith (Grove City, PA/Grove City) and freshman RF Stephanie Briggs (Grove City, PA/Grove City) each went 2-for-4.  Briggs banged out her third double in four games with a two-run shot to left center in the fifth, scoring Smith and Atwood, who reached on singles.  

Atwood struck out five in six innings of work and allowed seven runs (four earned) on seven hits.

In the nightcap, senior P Laura LeVake (Faribault, MN/Faribault) fanned eight over seven innings and yielded five runs (two earned) on four hits.  Grove City was held to six hits with Atwood accounting for one to finish 4-for-8 in the twin bill.  Atwood has hit safely in six of her last seven games with nine singles in the span.  Grove City led 1-0 through three innings before W&J posted three unearned runs in the fourth on three Lady Wolverine errors.

Grove City dropped to 1-10 overall and 0-2 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference, while Washington & Jefferson improved to 3-13 overall, 3-3 in the PAC.
